Mhamid is a small Sahara Desert village in the region of Zagora in Southern Morocco. It is one of the two gateways to the Sahara in Morocco (together with Merzouga). Mhamid is arguably the most “authentic” part of the Sahara Desert, and is the perfect starting point for a true Sahara Desert experience.
Mhamid is just 7- 8 hours by car from Marrakesh and 5 hours from Ourzazate.
Mhamid’s original name is Taragalte. Once a thriving village inhabited by a mix of local Berbers, Drawa, Chorfa, Beni Mhamed and Hassani tribes, its original location Mhamid Bali is today an old kasbah located 2Km away from the main road, settled many years ago by black Africans from Sudan. The main attraction of Mhamid is its proximity to the desert, especially to the Erg Chegaga dunes, about 50Km from town. Mhamid is a fabulous starting point for desert tours, overnight or over several days: they can be done by camel, 4×4, motor bike or quad bike. Longer treks to Erg Chegaga and Erg Ez-Zahar may last from 3 to 10 days.
Among the highlights of a Morocco desert tour are the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas pass, the Draa River Valley, camel trekking in Erg Chegaga, the Lake Iriqui salt flats and the World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou.
How to reach the Erg Chegaga sand dunes
The Erg Chigaga sand dunes can be reached in a 4×4 from Mhamid or Foum Zguid. From Mhamid it is also possible to camel trek to the dunes in 3 days, returning by 4×4, or there and back again in 5 days.
4-day or 5-day 4×4 Desert Tours can be organized from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga, generally including one or two nights in the desert. In alternative, you may include a longer camel trek from Mhamid.
Organised 4day or 5day 4×4 Desert Tours from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga include one or two nights in the desert. Or, if you want a longer camel trek, include a 3day camel trek from Mhamid to the sand sea. The highlights of a desert trip are the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas pass, Draa River Valley, camel trekking in Erg Chigaga, the salt flat and World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou.
